Icheri Sheher

Icheri Sheher is the heart of the city, has a history of thousands of years and is located in the historic centre of ancient Baku.

Icheri Sheher is the oldest residential area in Baku. It was declared a historical and cultural reserve in 1977, and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.

Icheri Sheher got its name following the economic development of the 19th century. As the oil industry developed in Baku, the city expanded beyond the fortress walls, so there became an inner and an outer city. The territory of Icheri Sheher was inhabited with people as early as in the Bronze Age and by the VIII-XI centuries it had been completely populated.

Shirvanshahs Palace

Shirvanshahs Palace is a masterpiece of Azerbaijani architecture. It was built at the beginning of the XV century and forms a complex, which also includes Divankhana, Shirvanshahs tomb, the palace mosque with a minaret and the mausoleum of court scientist Seyid Yahya Bakuvi. In 1964 the complex was declared as a museum-reserve and was taken under state protection.

Maiden Tower

Maiden Tower is a 12th-century monument in the south-eastern part of the Baku fortress, opposite the Boulevard, stands one of the oldest constructions of Baku . Maiden Tower is a legendary place and world-famous landmark in Baku. The castle is covered by secrets and  legends that have been tied to the history and national culture of Azerbaijan. The tower has 8 floors and a height is 28 meters. In 1964 the Maiden Tower became a museum.
