Icheri Sheher is the heart of the city. It is located on a hill near the sea which sprang ancient Baku.
Icheri Sheher is the oldest residential area in Baku. In 1977 year it was declared a historic-cultural reserve and in year 2000 entered the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is often referred to as a fortress Icheri Sheher as it is surrounded by well-preserved ramparts. People on the territory of Icheri Sheher lived in the Bronze Age, and at the VIII-XI centuries it has been fully settled.
Shirvanshahs Palace is a masterpiece of architecture of Azerbaijani architecture. It was built at the beginning of the XV century and forms a complex, which also includes Divankhana, Shirvanshahs tomb, the palace mosque with a minaret and the mausoleum of court scientist Seyid Yahya Bakuvi. In 1964 the complex was declared as a museum-reserve and was taken under state protection.
Maiden Tower is In the south-eastern part of the Baku fortress, opposite the Boulevard, stands one of the oldest constructions of Baku . On the tower is preserved inscription suggests that it is built no later than the XII century. The tower has 8 floors and a height is 28 meters. In 1964 the Maiden Tower became a museum.
